Taj Irzhavsky (*1994, pronouns: they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist working across video, film, collage, performance, installation, and text. Their practice investigates serendipity and synchronicity: moments when an internal mental constellation unexpectedly synchronizes with an external event. Combining conceptual strategies with intuitive processes, Irzhavsky explores perception and coincidence through moving images, language, found materials, and performative situations.
Irzhavsky approaches technologies of image production not only as tools for recording reality, but as instruments of encounter. They question the historically dominant white, Eurocentric, and heteronormative gaze embedded in visual culture and its conventions of seeing. Misreadings, errors, and moments of misunderstanding are embraced as productive disruptions that unsettle normalized ways of perceiving. Rather than reinforcing established narratives, their work challenges the primacy of vision as the dominant mode of knowing, opening space for multiple ways of sensing, interpreting, and relating to the world. The camera, scanner, and everyday devices become methods of observing, translating, and transforming the world.
They completed their studies in Fine Arts at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Prof. Rita McBride, graduating as a Meisterschüler*in (Diplom with distinction), and hold an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Irzhavsky lives and works in Düsseldorf/Germany.
